Built in 1895 by a private group of citizens, the grandstand provided seating for spectators of cycling and horse races and the athletic competitions that took place inside the "Oval" track. The grandstand was demolished in 1953 but evidence of the Oval and its former terraced hillsides is still visible in the park today.

PARK PATROL; 2004.

The park provided the perfect setting for leisurely bicycle rides. In 1936 bicycles had to follow the posted speed limit of 15 miles per hour and bicyclists were ordered to avoid all walkways, lawns and flowerbeds. In 1995 Waterloo Park became a part of the Trans Canada Trail, providing bicyclists with a link to other trails throughout the City. Today, students are hired during the summer months to patrol the park on bicycles.

RIBBON; 1895. In the fall of 1892 a quarter-mile bicycle track was laid out in the Park by Superintendent Andrew McIntyre, Joel Good and a maintenance crew. A popular sport of the day, the Waterloo Bicycle Club hosted the 13th Annual Meet of the Canadian Wheelman’s Association during Dominion Day celebrations on July 1 and 2, 1895. More than 10,000 spectators came out to watch the championship races that year. The Meet became an annual Dominion Day event in Waterloo Park.
