Land Use Plan Review, City of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada

Columbia, University, King and Lester Land Use Plan Review

The Columbia, University, Albert and King Neighbourhood has undergone a Land Use Planning Review.

What is a Neighbourhood Review?

A Neighbourhood Land Use Plan Review is a process to consider the appropriateness and applicability of the current Zoning and Official Plan designations on the lands.  It is a review of the basis and assumptions on which the land use is based.  A review of the area was completed in 2004 through the Student Accommodation Study (DS-04-47) which was a long range plan for housing for students and the long term development of the neighbourhoods near the University.

Public Meeting April 7, 2008

A Public Meeting was held on Monday, April 7, 2008 to consider staff's report DS-08-17 concerning the Columbia Street, University Avenue, King Street and Lester Street Neighbourhood Land Use Planning Review.  Staff recommended that the current Official Plan designations and the Zoning provisions remain in place and that there be no land use changes for the study area.

Student Accommodation Study Monitoring

In addition to the Neighbourhood Land Use Plan Review, the City has done monitoring of its Student Accommodation Study in order to examine its impacts and determine whether or not it is working. As a reminder, the Student Accommodation Study was adopted in 2004 and focused on examining new and existing ways of providing safe, affordable and suitable housing for students in the City of Waterloo--the result being the Universities Neighbourhoods Land Use Plan.
