The opening of the City of Waterloo Museum at Conestoga Mall signals an exciting new chapter in the City's heritage collection history. This permanent display and exhibition space for the City's heritage collection of over 10,000 artifacts, is a unique and significant opportunity for the Heritage Resources division, part of the City of Waterloo's Community, Culture & Recreation Services Department.
The mall donated 4,000 square feet for the museum in an innovative partnership that will allow the City's collection to come out of storage, when it was last permanently displayed at the Seagram Museum.
The museum’s development was also greatly assisted through grant money received by the federal government’s Department of Canadian Heritage. Funding from the government went toward payment for storage units, movers and a special security system and wireless environmental monitoring equipment that keeps the collection at an appropriate temperature and humidity level.
The museum at Conestoga Mall will allow these valuable and fascinating artifacts to be accessible to the public year round in permanent displays and rotating exhibitions. It will also permit Heritage Resources to proactively add to the collection and provide a wonderful venue for interaction with the community.
