Desk,
circa 1884.

This desk is attributed to having belonged to Joseph Emm Seagram. Former Waterloo plant manager, Arthur Hock, recalled how this desk was found in one of the warehouses on the site. In need of repair, it was sent to a local shop for restoration. A close examination of the desk revealed an important clue to its history. On the inside of the rolled closure are thin strips of newsprint from the Montreal newspaper, Le Monde, one dated "Jeudi 13 mars 1884" (Thursday, March 13, 1884). In the construction of this desk, newspaper was originally used to join the veneer pieces together. This find suggests that this desk was probably manufactured in Quebec around 1884. Could Seagram have acquired this piece of furniture for his office during his political career in Ottawa? Seagram served as the Conservative Member of Parliament for Waterloo North between 1896 to 1908.
