"Going Over the Bridge"

The administrative offices on Caroline Street were separated from the other buildings on the site by Laurel Creek which ran through the property. A wooden foot bridge, and later a concrete bridge, connected the two areas. To the employees, this bridge came to represent more than just a walkway. Having to cross the bridge became synonymous with disciplinary action. Workers joked with each other to "be careful, or you'll be hauled across the bridge". One worker explained: "When this happened, staff had to have some good answers ready, because it was likely that they would be standing at attention before the powers that be".
