Letters of compliance
City hall is open for limited services. Call 519-747-8712 or email building@waterloo.ca to book an appointment.
Letters of compliance provide the following information:
- current zoning and compliance with current use
- pending zoning on property (if applicable)
- compliance with building setbacks
- status of building and plumbing permits on file
- any zoning or property standard violations
- any heritage significance
Application process
- Download, fill out and print a letter of compliance application (PDF).
- Submit complete application in person at the IPPW counter on the second floor of city hall, or by mail to: City of Waterloo Building Standards, 100 Regina Street South, PO Box 337 STN Waterloo, Waterloo, ON, N2J 4A8
- Pay applicable fee (find chart below). We accept cash, cheque or debit.
- Regular service can take up to two weeks and is only sent through mail. Rush service provides a response by email within three to five business days. The original document will follow by mail.

Additional information
- A copy of a survey is to be submitted for zoning letter of compliance requests. Zoning comments are based on the survey submitted. Submitting a current survey will ensure accuracy on our part.
- An accurate description of the proposed use(s) of the property will ensure accuracy on our part.
