Arenas and outdoor rinks

Due to COVID-19 restrictions, capacity at outdoor rinks is limited to 25 people on ice at a time. Please follow signage posted at the rinks for hours and regulations.

Waterloo Public Square rink (closed for the season)

The outdoor rink in uptown is located at Waterloo Public Square, 75 King Street South. The rink:

  • is open from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. daily during cold weather months
  • can be closed due to poor weather - call 519-886-1177 for closure information
  • is not designed for hockey - sticks and pucks are not allowed

Note that we do not rent skates on site.

COVID protocol

Do not visit a rink if you:

  1. Have a fever, new cough, shortness of breath or a combination of muscle aches, fatigue, headache, sore throat or runny nose.
  2. Have travelled outside of Canada within the last 14 days.
  3. Have been in close contact with a person with a confirmed or probable case of COVID-19.

To all others, please wash your hands or use sanitizer before and after every visit, and maintain physical distancing of 6 feet/2 metres.

When visiting the rink:

  1. Capacity is limited on the ice surface and is subject to change.
  2. Follow directional signage to enter and exit the ice surface.
  3. Physical distancing must be maintained. 
  4. Good respiratory etiquette is encouraged. This includes coughing or sneezing into a bent elbow and wearing a mask. See regional public health advice for more.
  5. Outdoor washrooms will not be available. 
  6. Please be aware that outdoor Public Square rink amenities are not sanitized.

Outdoor community rinks

Community rinks are located at schools and parks and run by volunteers. Contact waterloorinks@waterloo.ca for more information on helping out.

Locations are available using our outdoor rink map. Schedules are not currently online but will be posted at rink sites.

Hockey games or shinny are not permitted . Drills and shooting with physical distancing are allowed.

Under COVID restrictions, neighbourhood rinks are only for physical recreation, not for gathering or socializing. Please visit them only with the members of your own household.

General rules for outdoor rinks

  1. Use of appropriate helmets is strongly recommended.
  2. Please respect our environment, dispose of litter in the receptacle provided.
  3. Slap shots are not permitted at any time.
  4. Pucks must stay on the rink surface at all times.
  5. Refrain from skating during periods of thaw when ice surface is wet or soft.
  6. Keep children, pets, and vulnerable individuals away from rink surfaces that are wet or thawed.
